How to Save Money on Diamonds

Diamonds are graded and priced according to the four C’s: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. Most people who shop for Diamonds focus on Carats but you can save a lot of money by purchasing a diamond that is a fraction under a full Carat. No one outside of the diamond industry is going to be able to tell the difference between a 0.90 and 1.00 carat diamond but the cost of going for the full carat can be significantly more.
Where you shop for diamonds also has a big impact on the price of a diamond. Shopping at a tier 1 jewler like Tifanny’s is going to cost much much more than purchasing a diamond from diamond wholesalers or internet sites. I watched a segment on TV were Costco begain selling diamonds and they were compared with diamonds from other major branded retailers like Tifanny’s. The Costco diamonds were judged to be as good in quality but significantly cheaper. Most people are paying a mark-up of 10-50% for the privalage of buying from a major branded jewler.

Blue Diamond

Christies sells diamond for record $24.3 million

Christie’s Auction House sold an extremely rare, 17th-century fancy deep grayish-blue diamond for 16.39 million pounds ($24.3 million), a world record price for any diamond or piece of jewelry sold at auction.
The pre-sale estimate was about half the sale price, 9 million pounds.
Famed jeweler Laurence Graff bought the 35.56-carat, historic Wittelsbach diamond, which came to the international market for the first time in almost 80 years, in a highly competitive auction, a Christie’s spokesperson told Reuters.
Large blue diamonds of high clarity, such as this, are very rare. The history of the stone also enhanced its value.
"The importance of the piece, the rarity of it, was recognized," said Keith Penton, head of Christie’s jewelry department in London.
He said there was strong interest in the diamond from jewelers and private collectors.
The diamond, which was found in an Indian diamond mine, was part of the dowry of the Infanta Margarita Teresa (1651-1673) upon her engagement to Leopold I of Austria.

How To Examine A Diamond

Fancy Color Diamonds - Tickle Your Fancy

In 1817, R.J. Hauy, an eminent French mineralogist, wrote "Gems are the flowers of the mineral kingdom .... fancy color diamonds are the orchids." Fancy color diamonds, like orchids, are truly exotic and rare beauties of nature.
Yellows, reds, pinks, purples, blues and greens are not what you expect from diamonds. Anyone who has studied the 4 Cs can tell you, "When it comes to diamonds, the less color .... the better." While this is true, it is only true up to a point. Slight traces of color can be annoying and detract from a diamond's beauty and value. But when a diamond sparkles with brilliant, intense color, it is a gem of great rarity and beauty. These extraordinary gems are known as "fancy color diamonds."

Introduction to How Diamonds Work

On your next trip to the local shopping mall, stop by one of the jewelry stores. Notice the diamond jewelry that takes up the majority of the showcase and the number of people hovering over the counters trying to pick out diamonds for their loved ones. There will surely be a salesperson explaining the "4 Cs" -- cut, clarity, carat and color -- to a young shopper, and explaining why one diamond is better than the one right next to it. Why all the fuss over diamonds?

Sona Diamond

That shiny sparkling stone you got from your lover… is that a diamond? Lab manufactured diamonds are getting exceedingly good. They have the same color, clarity, cut and carat as minded diamonds and —since they are created in a laboratory— you can be sure they are ‘conflict free‘. The one in the picture is from Israel (speaking of conflict free zones) and can be bought here.
Of course, if you really want something exclusive for your lover, you should forget about diamonds altogether and get some biojewellery.

My Own Private Kuwait

Today I went to check out the Jewelry exhibition coz my friend’s aunty is participating with her thing…Anyway the whole exhibition was basically semi-boring with amateur hideous-frock wearing trannies/models modeling whatever diamonds they’re wearing with guards following them around. eh. Anyway the hottest "exhibit" for me was at the entrance (or exit?) where the JAMARIK or customs or whatever they’re called are showing busted illegal items such as pirated DVD’s and ummmm….BLACK MAGIC SPELLS? too much witch craft torn papers with spells written on them and like magic stones, there was even a small like glass tube with a dark brown liquid inside it, when my friend asked the guy what is it he said it’s female period blood :O sick.
I urge people to go there only if they enjoy the CRAZY.

Natural History Highlight

Hundreds of rare precious gemstones are on display in the Gems and Minerals Galleries at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. According to Dr. Jeff Post, curator of the United States National Gem and Mineral Collection and avid mineralogist, few of those gems garner more attention than the world famous and Smithsonian’s own, Hope Diamond. With its breathtaking beauty and mysterious past, the Hope Diamond intrigues millions of museum visitors each year; but beyond its rumored curse, the world’s largest blue diamond is proving to be a unique scientific specimen

Conflict Diamonds

Diamonds are forever

Diamonds are a girl's best friend. But, dont leave this guy out.
Something shiny outweighs strife and the mundane droan that sometimes describes life. We then interweave math into our lives by flashing something that shines. How? well look at a diamond. A jeweler weighs a diamond to fit it to a ring. The metals are expensive so an exact precision of measurement is necessary to avoid waste. Math is also used to find out the weight of the stone. The weight of the stone is measured by the proportion of the stones. This is called carat weight. In addition to the carat weight of a diamond, jewelers use precise mathematical formulas to transform a rough diamond into a sparkling jewel that refracts and reflects light. This process gives us the cut of a diamond. We know that mathematics is the pursuit of pure relationships and science is the pursuit of understanding of nature. A jeweler combines this knowledge and designs a diamond which signifies something to grand and opulent. The difficulty of the math involved in shaping a diamond is reflective of the price and the weight it holds in society.

Diamond on show in Nanning

A model shows a diamond, weighing 26.62 karats, in Nanning, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region November 27, 2006. The diamond, named Aurora Borealis due to its color and place of discovery, is said to be valued at 40 million yuan (US$5.1 million). The diamond will go on an exhibition tour to other cities in China. (newsphoto)

Bloody Diamonds

About a month ago my friend Paul was posting about the upcoming blockbuster Blood Diamond and wondering why Diamond Facts – the website set up by the diamond industry to dispel the film’s central idea that the diamond trade might be fuelling conflict in Africa – wasn’t linking to Global Witness, the NGO that has been at the forefront of much of the (often risky) research on the issue.
Well, here’s why. Global Witness, Amnesty International USA and… er… Warner Bros have joined forces to launch a new website, Blood Diamond Action, where Diamond Facts’ claim that more than 99% of diamonds are now from conflict-free sources is bluntly contested:
It is extremely difficult to estimate the current percentage of conflict diamonds as smuggling can easily take place outside government controls, creating a trade in illicit diamonds. Illicit trade, thought to represent up to 20% of global trade, shows that there are serious loopholes in the Kimberley Process. Any type of diamond smuggling highlights weak spots in a system through which conflict diamonds can potentially infiltrate. Poor government controls also allow some conflict diamonds to be certified as ‘conflict-free’. Some members of the diamond industry are knowingly flouting international and national law, yet the lack of industry oversight and willingness to find and expel unscrupulous members of the trade allows these traders to operate with impunity.

White Dwarf Stars: Like a Diamond in the Sky

The reason this star, with the obscure designation of BPM 37093 is so special to astronomers is that it has aided them in proving a theory held for decades: that white dwarf stars cool and crystallize into carbon, a giant diamond.
Astronomers say the star has a diameter of 2,500 miles and weighs in at an astonishing five million, trillion, trillion pounds. That would make the diamond core ten billion, trillion, trillion carats! The largest gem-quality diamond yet found on Earth was the 3,106-carat "Cullinan" discovered in 1905. The 530-carat "Star of Africa" in the British crown jewels was cut from it.
The star is located in the constellation Centaurus and is about fifty light years distant (A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, or about 6 trillion miles.)
There are many kinds of stars in the cosmos. The Sun is part of a group of stars called main sequence stars, and most of these end their lives as white dwarves.
The stars burn up all their hydrogen and then begin to expand into red giant stars. Red giants are extremely large. If our Sun was a red giant, it would extend well beyond the orbit of Mars, swallowing the Earth in it's atmosphere!
The stars continue fusing elements until it loses its shell of gases, leaving behind a hot core of about 180,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Then the star begins to cool. The star pulsates as it burns helium in fusion reactions creating heavier and heavier elements until at the very end there is carbon and a very small amount of oxygen. A star will spend billions of years in this phase.
The problem with proving the theory about the crystallization is that by the time the star has crystallized, it is no longer pulsating and is so cool that they are impossible to detect. But BPM 37093 is the most massive known dwarf star. Because it is so massive, the star is crystallizing on the inside while light and sound continue to pulsate from the surface.
"By measuring those pulsations, we were able to study the hidden interior of the white dwarf, just like seismograph measurements of earthquakes allow geologists to study the interior of the Earth. We figured out that the carbon interior of this white dwarf has solidified to form the galaxy's largest diamond," says Metcalfe.
The same fate awaits our own Sun. In about five billion years, our Sun will use up it's hydrogen, expand into a red giant and at last become a white dwarf star. A few billion years after that, our Sun will have cooled and the core crystallized into a diamond that is truly forever.

Carat Weighy

Carat-Weight – Bigger is Bigger – not necessarily better. This is the weight of the diamond measured in carats. One carat is divided into 100 "points", so a diamond of 75 points weighs .75 carats. Carat-weight is the easiest of the 4C’s to determine. But two diamonds of equal weight can have very unequal value, depending on their cut, color and clarity. Fine quality can be found in diamonds of all shapes and sizes. And a fine quality diamond is a little extra weight she’d be pleased to put on!

QuickSpec: Scandal! But Perhaps Not Edition

Eco Conscious Diamonds, Synthetics and Simulants

The holidays are upon us and many of us want to celebrate the special women in our lives with jewelry. Based on the commercials and marketing, a diamond is a girls best friend and diamonds are forever. Thats nice and all, but how do you (or she) feel about them? The subject of Blood Diamonds (or conflict diamonds as they are also known) has been raised to a much higher mainstream level of consciousness, so there are social responsibilities to consider, but what about ecological? Mining isn’t exactly eco-friendly, and its not something that many think about when purchasing jewelry. So what are we left to do to ice out or make our girls feel special?
Ok, I’m done asking questions and it’s time to start providing answers. I’m going to cover mined diamonds, reclaimed diamonds, synthetic diamonds, and diamond simulants. Each has its own benefits and varying impacts on the environment to produce, just think of how educated you will become!
